  • 1.  Enhancements to SIP RCD

    Posted 01-06-2026 01:00:00 PM

    Hi Members

I would like to receive comments from members about the idea of extending SIP RCD with device information.

While I do agree that there is not much activity on RCD and also adding device information, I would like initial comments on this topic.

I can share more details if this is the appropriate means to share details.

    Regards

    Ranjit

    Hi Ranjit,

I think there are two main standards development paths available to you for adding device information to RCD PASSporTs.

One way you could investigate adding device information to an RCD PASSporT is to write an Internet-Draft (I-D) describing how this would be done for review and consideration for adoption by the IETF STIR working group which, if the process was successful, would ultimately obsolete and replace (i.e., update) the existing RCD RFC.

ATIS/SIP Forum JTF on IP-NNI is the group that defined how to use STIR PASSporTs defined in the IETF.  E.g., ATIS-1000094v2 is the main ATIS standard defining how to use RCD PASSporTs.   In ATIS, instead of an Internet-Draft, you can write an Issue Statement.  The Issue Statement would describe why you think including device information in a new standard (or a v3 update to ATIS-1000094), should be considered.  The Issue Statement will be added to an IP-NNI meeting agenda and then be reviewed by the IP-NNI TF who will decide whether and how to proceed.

I invite Mary Barnes, et al, to correct me if I'm leading you astray.  Anna Karditzas and/or Jackie Wohlgemuth with ATIS can help you with the process for submitting an Issue Statement for consideration and review.

Lastly, because PASSporTs are extensible, if you have an RCD use case which would benefit from device information, a non-standard implementation is also possible.  I know there are non-standard implementations of RCD in operation in the wild today, so it is another path available to you, albeit not a standards-based path.

    Hope this helps.

    Best regards,

    Hi Pierce

Yes I plan to write an issue statement describing the current challenges and benefits of adding device info to RCD.  Attached is the issue statement I intend to submit but i do not see any method to do it

    Hi Ranjit,

I think I've given this feedback in the past, but STIR is about call authentication vs device authentication.  Do you really want to share your IMEI or any other device specific identifiers outside the local carrier network let alone with a called party?  Isn't that CPNI data?  Would be curious how that makes sense to deliver that as part of a SIP INVITE within a call.
Usually devices authenticate to the local network as a UNI procedure private to a specific carrier network.  In SIP, it's over REGISTER message using SIP credentials vs device info.
Would a carrier want to sign any of that device identification information and put it in the call/INVITE?  Can they even legally do that?
I guess I really need help understanding why this would be interesting in the scope of STIR or SHAKEN or RCD, perhaps I'm misunderstanding the intent.

    Hi Chris

by device information, I don't mean IMEI -  but information about the device from which the call is originating.

    Some examples could be:

    • "device-info", {"type": "work"}, "text", "People care"]
    • "device-info", {"type": "mobile"}, "text", "Carol Smith"]
    • "device-info", {"type": "desk"}, "text", "Cisco 8851 Desk Phone"]

Some of the benefits of adding device info to SIP RCD are

    1. knowing originating device model, firmware helps operations pinpoint compatibility issues
    2. In enterprise environments, the called party may want to know from which device the call is originating, e.g. desk phone or mobile
    3. Adding device info can add additional layer of fraud scoring
    4. Regulated industries like finance, healthcare, etc. are required to log the call details, e.g. "call originated from Cisco 8851 desk phone"
    5. Device specific routing of calls e.g. route calls from mobile to mobile friendly IVR

A lot of that type of info already fits into existing jCard info already defined.  Realistically, though, It's going to be a stretch to get endpoints to adopt anything beyond name/logo/reason near term though.

So what information on the device?

    Hi Martin

about what kind of device - e.g. mobile phone or desk phone or app.  further if it is front office desk, etc. This information will help routing of calls better.
